  Abstract

Responding to Janet L. Nelson's Samuel Lecture (History Workshop Journal 66), ‘Organic Intellectuals’ on the nature of intellectual leadership in the Middle Ages, Rubin introduces the concept of charisma to develop discussion of contemporary forms of religious leadership and the authority of religious leaders.
